Elder Care Certificate

This certificate program is designed to prepare workers in the expanding field of services to those who are aging, such as supported elder housing facilities, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, adult day care agencies, home care agencies, councils on aging, senior centers and others. Aspects of the psychological dimensions of aging over a life span, theories of aging, biological changes associated with aging, life course transitions, family relationships and social support are topics that are addressed throughout this 21-credit certificate program.

Learning Objectives: 

Upon successful completion of all Elder Care certificate program requirements, graduates will be able to: 

  • Analyze the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of aging and how they influence the delivery of person-centered elder care. 

  • Identify and respond to common challenges faced by older adults, including health conditions, cognitive changes, social isolation, and loss of independence, with a focus on prevention and crisis management. 

  • Evaluate the role of healthcare systems, public policy, and social services in shaping access to and quality of elder care. 

  • Demonstrate culturally responsive and ethical care practices, recognizing diverse perspectives on aging while promoting autonomy, dignity, and safety for older adults. 

  • Communicate effectively and reflect on personal growth, utilizing respectful, empathetic approaches with older adults, and engaging in ongoing professional development and self-care. 

 

Credit for Prior Learning: 

Due to shared learning outcomes and the added benefit of professional certification in different employable areas, Certified Nursing Assistant or Patient Care Technician certification may substitute HUS 110 through credit for prior learning.
